I’ve learned situational depression and depression are real illnesses…

Throughout my younger years, I would get depressed when situations were not good. This would cause me to stay in bed all weekend (had to go to school during the week), and everyone thought I was lazy.

Now that I am older and have been on antidepressants for a good 15 years, I do not go into a clinical depression in the same way. Although I still get a little down when a situation I’m in is not good, with antidepressants, I’m better able to handle it; I don’t spend all day in bed wanting to end my emotional pain the way I did when younger.

I am also being treated for depression with a prescription for medical cannabis, which also treats my PTSD caused by bullying when I was 13 years old and then in an abusive relationship for eighteen years in which I was trying to be a ‘Stepford Wife’ (aka a ‘Suzy Homemaker’) when I am NOT a domestic goddess at all. I’d rather be writing or reading than cleaning!

My diagnosis of situational depression came about when I was 51. Was that a relief; to finally know what was wrong with me since I was thirteen, was refreshing and educational.

Now I also advocate for NAMI [National Alliance for Mental Illnesses] and the Mental Health Institute [MHI], a government agency, to which I donate monetarily and via…
